Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Bourbon

Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Bourbon (90 proof $23.99) is deep amber in color. The extracted bourbon carries with it a tremendous amount of tannins and color from the barrel, giving this whisky a deep, dark color. The nose is clearly dominated by strong oak tones with clear cinnamon spice and an undertone of vanilla and caramel. It’s a bold and spicy nose, much more aggressive than the tradition Jim Beam. The entry is very oak forward as the oak notes explode on the palate. Things ease a bit by the mid palate and more of the vanilla and caramel notes find their way from underneath the bold oak. There are some slight cinnamon spice notes present but they do battle with the oak and ultimately get lost. You can buy Jim Beam Devil's Cut online now. The finish is fairly long and dry with the oak notes really lingering.

"Not clear if this is a long-term ager, but you definitely want to give it a good decanting of at least four hours. You should even pour the glasses and let them to stand for an hour. Four Loko Making a Comeback

Alcoholic energy drink makers Four Loko was pulled off store shelves last year. They were accused of targeting underage consumers with their soda-like flavors. They were also linked to a surge of date rapes as well. The founders of Four Loko tried to stay out of the spot light.

"If you set out to engineer a booze delivery system that is as cloying, deceptive and divorced from the usual smells, tastes and presentation of alcohol as possible, you'd be hard pressed to come up with something more impressive than Four Loko," wrote former New York Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni in the midst of the flap last fall. "It's a malt liquor in confectionary drag...Four Loko cans--I paid $3.50 apiece for mine--are something to see, each sporting a few ultrabright, childlike hues in a kind of rippling weave that evokes a camouflage pattern. Fatigues like these are what an army of Teletubbies would wear into battle."

Center of Effort Pinot Noir

Here's a great Pinot Noir from a soon to be legendary winemaker. I have to say, this probably is one of the best pinot noirs I have ever tasted. It really is worthy of its 95 point rating from the Wine Enthusiasts.

Wine tasting notes from the winemaker:

The 2008 Pinot Noir boasts a deep, intense color that speaks directly to its originating terroir. The palate shows firm structure, luscious viscosity and hints of earthy spice that complement toasty flavors of black cherry and blackberry.

About Center of Effort Wine:

In the foothills of the western Edna Valley lies a landmark estate vineyard, its roots
spanning three decades. Over the years, each member of our winery family was
personally touched by this place in one way or another. We now come full circle,
returning to create something special. The resulting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are,
we believe, without parallel. They represent the intersection of caretaking, skill and
commitment—truly a “Center of Effort.”

Wine Enthusiasts magazine recently reviewed the 2008 Center of Effort Pinot Noir in their August 2011 issue (soon to be released). They gave it a 95 point rating. Check out their review below.

95 Points - Editor's Choice
One of the best Edna Valley Pinot Noirs ever. This region normally produces Pinots with crisp acidity and fine varietal character, and so it is here, with its cherry, black raspberry, red currant and sandalwood flavors. But there's extra depth and complexity, with a wildly exotic, spicy edge, that lift the wine into greatness. Right up there with the best of coastal California. Hard to tell where it's going, but give it a good decant before serving.
